About the Item

This print is from "Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna," which is a significant work depicting Sweden during its era as a great power. The collection of engravings was commissioned by Erik Dahlbergh, inspired by similar topographical works from the Swiss publisher Matthäus Merian. Granted royal privilege in 1661, Dahlbergh spent over a decade compiling the images for this work, which was published posthumously in three volumes. This original antique engraving is of Hesselby (also known as Hässelby) Castle, directed towards the east. This castle is located in the western part of Stockholm, Sweden. The engraving, which shows the manor and its elaborate gardens with people strolling, was created by Jan van Aveelen after designs by Erik Dahlbergh for the publication "Suecia antiqua et hodierna" (Ancient and Modern Sweden). Hässelby Castle's history dates back to the 17th century, and it was originally built as a private manor. Over time, the estate has undergone various modifications and changes in ownership. The gardens depicted in the engraving are designed in a formal style, typical of the Baroque period, emphasizing symmetry and order. Today, Hässelby Castle has been transformed and is now used for different purposes, including as a venue for conferences, events, and as a hotel, offering guests the opportunity to experience its historic environment. The area around Hässelby has also developed into a residential suburb of Stockholm.
