Evocative Scenes from King George's Harbour (modern-day Albany, Australia), 1836

About the Item

Title: Views from King George's Harbour, New Holland Description: This lithograph, circa 1836, offers two evocative scenes from King George's Harbour (modern-day Albany, Western Australia), showcasing the natural beauty and daily life surrounding this coastal region during Dumont d'Urville’s expedition aboard the Astrolabe. The upper panel presents a sweeping view of a serene lake near King George's Bay. The landscape features lush vegetation and gently rolling hills under a vast sky. In the foreground, European explorers interact with the environment, accompanied by a dog. Their presence is juxtaposed with the untouched natural surroundings, emphasizing the exploratory spirit of the era. The lower panel depicts the watering place of the Astrolabe, a crucial site for resupplying during maritime expeditions. Indigenous figures and European sailors are shown collaborating along the shoreline, with small boats docked nearby. The scene highlights the practicalities of 19th-century exploration while capturing the spirit of cultural interaction and mutual dependence. Created by Louis Auguste de Sainson, this lithograph was included in Brodtmann’s *Entdeckungs, Reise der Franzosischen Corvette Astrolabe*. It vividly illustrates the landscapes and human connections that defined these voyages of discovery. Condition Report: Marginal toning and light foxing, with minor edge wear. Both panels remain clean and detailed, with sharp contrasts. Overall in very good condition, but a tear and a small hole in the bottom part, not into the image.
