Exquisite 1806 Engraving of Vishnu as Varaha: A Mythic Rescue

About the Item

Exquisite 1806 Engraving of Vishnu as Varaha: A Mythic Rescue Description: This remarkable antique print, titled "Xe Incarnation de Vichenou sous la forme d’un Cheval," portrays the tenth incarnation of Vishnu, though the depiction aligns more accurately with Varaha, the boar avatar, rather than a horse as the title suggests. Published in 1806, this piece is part of Pierre Sonnerat's influential work, "Voyage aux Indes orientales et à la Chine," which documented his travels and observations in India. Sonnerat, a French naturalist and explorer, worked with the artist Poinson to create this detailed illustration, reflecting the European curiosity about Indian mythology during the early 19th century. The print is labeled as Plate 48, showcasing Vishnu in his Varaha form, a significant avatar in Hindu tradition where he rescues the earth from the demon Hiranyaksha by lifting it from the cosmic ocean. The artwork was crafted using copperplate engraving, a technique renowned for its ability to render fine details, such as the boar's facial features, ornate jewelry, and flowing garments. Varaha is depicted standing on a pedestal, holding a sword and a shield, with intricate patterns adorning his attire, symbolizing his divine power and majesty. What makes this print particularly intriguing is the apparent misidentification in the title—while labeled as a horse, the boar's head and iconography clearly represent Varaha, offering a fascinating glimpse into the challenges of cross-cultural interpretation at the time. This piece not only serves as an artistic representation but also as a historical artifact, capturing the complexities of European engagement with Indian religious iconography during a period of colonial exploration and cultural exchange. Condition Report: The print shows slight foxing and minor yellowing along the edges. A small stain on the upper left corner is visible but does not affect the central image. Overall, it is well-preserved for its age. Framing Tips: Use an acid-free mat to prevent further aging. Select a classic wooden frame with a silver finish to highlight its elegance. Opt for UV-protective glass to shield from fading, and display in a shaded area to avoid direct sunlight exposure.
