About the Item

Exterior and Interior Views of Montreal Cathedral – 19th Century Canadian Architecture This rare pair of 19th-century engravings offers a comprehensive visual record of the Cathedral of Montreal, showcasing both its striking Gothic exterior and richly ornamented interior. Created by the French engraver Lemaitre around 1850, these images were published in France as part of an illustrated survey of important architectural and cultural sites in Canada. The first engraving presents the exterior of the cathedral in full frontal view, revealing its Gothic Revival design. Tall pointed arches, lancet windows, buttresses, and ornamental detailing create a dramatic façade, while the adjacent bell tower and surrounding streetscape suggest a thriving colonial city. The presence of scaffolding and construction materials may indicate a moment during the cathedral’s expansion or renovation, adding a layer of historical realism to the scene. The second engraving depicts the interior, filled with parishioners and detailed with ribbed vaulted ceilings, clustered columns, a richly carved altar, and multiple levels of galleries filled with churchgoers. A crucifix and statuary line the right aisle, while a pulpit stands prominently on the left, from which a sermon is being delivered. The engraving captures the solemnity and grandeur of Catholic worship in 19th-century Montreal, with meticulous architectural precision. These works represent the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal, the city’s most prominent Catholic church, whose early-19th-century design was heavily influenced by European Gothic models. The basilica became a symbol of religious and cultural identity for French Canadians and remains one of the most iconic buildings in the country. Both prints are engraved in steel, a technique that allows for incredibly fine detail and subtle shading—evident in the rendering of vaulted ceilings, stone tracery, and crowd scenes. The matching pair offers historical value, architectural insight, and visual elegance. Condition: Both engravings are in very good condition. Light, even toning throughout. Some small spots of foxing in the margins. Mild edge wear consistent with binding removal. Paper is stable and both impressions are strong and detailed. Framing tips: This set would be ideal framed together in a double aperture mat or as a diptych. Use matching dark wood frames—walnut or black—and a warm off-white or parchment-colored mat. Gold fillets can enhance the architectural elegance without overpowering the monochrome tones. Technique: Steel engraving Maker: Lemaitre, France, c. 1850
