About the Item

Florentine Matron, Roman Senator, and Renaissance Physician in Historic Dress This exquisite set of three hand-colored costume prints represents a cross-section of Italian society during the late medieval to early Renaissance period. With precise lines and vibrant colors, each plate brings to life the attire and demeanor of individuals in three distinct yet interconnected spheres: the domestic, the political, and the intellectual. Together, they form a balanced and visually compelling narrative of Italian cultural identity. Plate No.62 features the *Matrone Florentie* (Florentine Matron), shown in a full-length lavender and blue gown adorned with delicate golden trim. Her serene expression and graceful posture convey dignity and composure. The garment’s soft draping and elegant layers reflect both modesty and the affluence of Florence’s upper-class households. This print highlights the matron's symbolic role as the cornerstone of familial and social stability in Renaissance civic life. In Plate No.63, we meet the *Sénator de Rome* (Roman Senator), dressed in an elaborate yellow and ivory robe with red sleeves, holding a ceremonial staff and scroll. His crown-like cap and formal posture evoke classical Roman authority revived through medieval and Renaissance interpretations of ancient republicanism. This senator embodies both tradition and the continued influence of Rome as a model for civic governance and law. The structured folds of his robe and dignified stance suggest wisdom, power, and public responsibility. Plate No.64 shows a *Médicin* (Physician), holding a small scroll or medical note, dressed in a red robe with a grey cloak and a soft red cap. The layering of his garments and his pensive pose reflect the seriousness and respect accorded to the medical profession during a time when science, astrology, and humanism began to blend. His attire, while not opulent, shows careful thought and status, underscoring the intellectual prestige associated with learned professions in this era. As a set, these three figures illustrate the breadth of Italian society—from the matron managing the household, to the senator directing the state, to the physician advancing thought and healing. They are beautifully drawn and historically resonant. Condition: Very good condition. Minor foxing in the margins only. The coloring is bright and original, with strong impressions and no signs of tearing or folding. Framing Tips: This trio benefits from horizontal alignment, with generous spacing between each print. Use a soft white or linen-colored mat to harmonize the tones, and a warm wooden frame—such as walnut, cherry, or black with gold accents—to complement the dignified color palette. Floating each plate with visible plate marks adds sophistication. Museum-quality UV-protective glass is advised for long-term preservation.

Civic Pride and Domestic Dignity in Siena: Treasurer, Matron, Rector - 1845 Description: This beautifully matched trio of hand-colored lithographs offers a rare and evocative look at civic and domestic dress in Renaissance Siena. Published in 1845, these images come from a celebrated series of historical costumes derived from authentic pictorial and sculptural sources. The prints bring to life three distinct societal roles—financial administrator, noble matron, and hospital rector—captured with finesse and saturated, historically accurate color. Plate No.37, titled "Trésorier" (Treasurer), portrays a Renaissance financier or bookkeeper at his desk, mid-task, with a ledger open and coins scattered across the surface. His orange cloak and deep crimson tunic are richly shaded, while the dark headwear adds gravity to his expression. He holds a money pouch in one hand and a quill in the other, suggesting both financial and administrative responsibility. This image vividly illustrates the importance of record-keeping and accountability in city governance. Plate No.38, "Matrone Siennoise" (Sienese Matron), presents a noblewoman in a stately turquoise gown...
