Franz Sturm's Illustration: a European Storm Petrel (Procellaria pelagica) 1830

About the Item

This illustration by Franz Sturm shows the female Procellaria pelagica, commonly known as the European storm petrel. The Latin inscription indicates this is the female specimen (L. Fem.). The artwork is signed “Fr. Sturm ex nat. pinx. et sc. 1830,” meaning it was painted and engraved from nature by Sturm in 1830. The European storm petrel is a small seabird in the petrel family, known for its ability to glide close to the ocean’s surface, often following ships and appearing during stormy weather, hence the name.
