About the Item

French 19th century framed lithograph print of a seaside fort at some unknown locale, simply titled Chateau fort sur le bord de la mer, translating to a “castle on the seaside.” Rendered in a monochromatic grayscale, the scene is dominated by a large tower in the background, rising above stone walls protecting the compound from the sea–as well as two cannons ready to fire–with a schooner raising its sails for departure. In the foreground, the corner of another seawall offers shelter to a dinghy tied up, with several figures on the narrow ledge taking in the action. Note that the paper is foxed and creased down the center, enclosed by a gorgeous gilt picture frame of similar age and condition that shows multiple areas of loss–please view the detailed images to see more. Faint artist’s signature visible to the lower left of the image.
