French 19th Century Hand-colored Fragonard Lithograph

About the Item

A striking French lithograph originally conceived by the 18th century painter Fragonard, reimagined in the 19th century by engraver Mathieu Barathier. Titled “Le Recit” which translates to English as both narrative and history, it’s a fitting concept to describe the Classical & mythological scene of a Greek philosopher and his young pupils gathered around a fire in some pastoral setting. Barathier has imbued the landscape with vitality by selectively coloring the figures in blues and yellows to varying saturation of hue. Framed and ready to hang in your interior. Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp – Dutch Admiral, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph Item Description: This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph portrays Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp, one of the most legendary naval commanders of the Dutch Republic. Born in 1598, Tromp served as a lieutenant admiral and played a crucial role during the Eighty Years’ War and the First Anglo-Dutch War. He is remembered for his naval victories against the Spanish and English fleets, and for raising a broom to the mast of his ship as a symbol that he had swept the seas of enemies.
