About the Item
French Peasant Woman Print La Rochelle 1853 by Compte-Calix – Hand-Colored Lithograph
This elegant antique print depicts a peasant woman (Paysanne) from the surroundings of La Rochelle, France. Created by François Claudius Compte-Calix, it was published in Paris in 1853 by Chez Aubert et C-ie as part of the acclaimed Le Keepsake de Costumes series, a luxurious publication presenting traditional costumes from across Europe and beyond.
François Claudius Compte-Calix (1813-1880) was a renowned French painter and lithographer celebrated for his romantic scenes and detailed costume studies. His works combined artistic sophistication with ethnographic accuracy, preserving regional costumes in their authentic detail.
This hand-colored lithograph, part of the Musée Cosmopolite collection, portrays the woman standing gracefully, carrying a basket lined with white cloth. She is dressed in a checked light blue apron over a red dress, with a mustard-yellow blouse visible at the sleeves. Her traditional tall white lace headdress adds an elegant regional touch, and she wears light blue stockings and black shoes with buckles. The lithograph delicately renders the textures of cloth and lace, and the fine hand coloring adds warmth and vibrancy to the image.
Lithography, used for this print, involved drawing directly on a limestone plate, which was then inked and pressed onto paper, allowing for intricate detail. The prints were then hand-colored with water-based pigments, enhancing their decorative appeal and lifelike quality.
Condition summary: generally good for its age, with some scattered foxing, mainly in the margins, and light toning typical of mid-19th century prints. The image itself remains bright and detailed.
Framing tips: this print will be beautifully presented in a light wood, oak, or gold frame to harmonize with its warm and elegant palette. A cream or light beige mat will enhance the delicate coloring and provide a subtle contrast with the aged paper. Museum-quality UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the colors and prevent further toning.
Ideal for collectors of French regional costumes, ethnographic art, or 19th-century lithography, this print also makes a beautiful decorative accent for kitchens, dining areas, hallways, or any space seeking an authentic touch of French rural history and timeless charm.
