French Youth, Italian Nobleman and Noblewoman in Renaissance Costume, 1845 Print

About the Item

French Youth, Italian Nobleman, and Noblewoman in Renaissance Costume This richly detailed set of three hand-colored prints offers a colorful glimpse into the elegant and expressive fashion of Renaissance Europe. Each figure—distinct in personality, attire, and social role—reflects the refined sensibilities of the 15th century, with vibrant costumes, fluid poses, and carefully stylized gestures. As a group, the prints reveal the visual dialogue between French and Italian aristocratic culture in this period. Plate No.71 portrays a *Jeune François* (Young Frenchman) captured mid-step, gazing softly at a rose he holds delicately in one hand. His costume is graceful and flamboyant: a green doublet with golden embroidery and long hanging sleeves, paired with fitted rose-colored hose. The stylized movement of his stride and his poetic expression evoke themes of courtship and romantic idealism, embodying the youthful gallantry celebrated in French court culture. Plate No.72 depicts a *Noble Italien* (Italian Nobleman), standing in solemn formality. Dressed in a flowing red robe with blue underlayers and a white pleated collar, he carries a small book—perhaps a legal or poetic text—signaling literacy, governance, or reflective virtue. His cap and neatly folded hands complete the image of a composed, high-ranking figure. The strong vertical composition of his robe and calm posture contrasts effectively with the more dynamic stance of the French youth. Plate No.73 presents a *Noble Italienne* (Italian Noblewoman), shown with soft elegance and a sense of introspection. She wears a striking red mantle lined with gold, layered over a blue and yellow gown. Her long sleeves extend over her hands, and she gazes upward with a serene, almost spiritual expression. Her braided hair is adorned with a subtle band, and she clutches a cloth, possibly a devotional item or a token of affection. Her presence, poised and contemplative, resonates with the visual vocabulary of early Renaissance Madonnas and courtly portraiture. Together, these three figures span emotional and social registers—from romantic youth to civic dignity and feminine virtue—offering a compelling tableau of Renaissance ideals in costume and comportment. Condition: The prints are in very good condition with only minimal spotting in the margins. Colors are vivid, especially in the reds and golds. No tears or creases are present, and plate impressions are clean and well-centered. Framing Tips: Arrange the prints in a horizontal line, starting with the French youth on the left and the noblewoman on the right for a balanced composition. Use a soft ivory or pale gray mat to harmonize the bold colors. A dark frame in walnut or ebony will add gravitas without overpowering the detail. Floating the plates with visible plate marks enhances their authenticity. Museum-quality glass is recommended for protection and color preservation.
