About the Item

Gerardus Johannes Vossius – Dutch Humanist Scholar, 19th-Century Lithograph This stately 19th-century hand-colored lithograph depicts Gerardus Johannes Vossius, one of the most respected Dutch humanist scholars and theologians of the seventeenth century. Born in 1577, Vossius became professor of rhetoric, theology, and history at the University of Leiden and later at the Athenaeum Illustre of Amsterdam. He was a prominent figure in the Dutch intellectual world and maintained close correspondence with René Descartes and Hugo Grotius. In this portrait, Vossius is shown in full academic attire, standing confidently in front of a building façade dated 1631. His dignified pose, wide-brimmed hat, and flowing scholar’s cloak convey his status as an erudite and respected figure of the Dutch Golden Age. The architectural detail in the background reinforces the scholarly environment in which he worked. This print was drawn by W F Hoevenaar and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht. The soft tones and clean lines reflect the high quality of mid-19th-century Dutch lithography, enhanced by delicate hand-coloring. Located in Langweer, NL
Constantijn Huygens – Dutch Golden Age Poet and Statesman, 19th-Century Lithograph This elegant 19th-century hand-colored lithograph features Constantijn Huygens, one of the most influential figures of the Dutch Golden Age. A poet, composer, scholar, diplomat, and secretary to the Princes of Orange, Huygens (1596–1687) was a true Renaissance man whose legacy spans literature, music, and science. He was the father of renowned scientist Christiaan Huygens and a central figure in the intellectual life of the seventeenth century. The print shows Huygens seated at his writing table, dressed in refined period clothing with a cloak draped over his shoulder. He appears relaxed yet engaged, with quill and ink before him and a red wax seal affixed to a document, suggesting his important diplomatic role. The soft light and classical pose highlight his role as both thinker and court official. Drawn by Herman ten Kate, known for his historical and literary subjects, and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht, this lithograph is a wonderful example of 19th-century Dutch revivalist portraiture with hand-applied color.
