About the Item

German & Austro-Hungarian Military Uniforms – Cavalry, Infantry & Artillery, c.1890 1. German Army Lithograph – Cavalry, Lancers, Guards & River Crossing, c.1890 2. German Army Lithograph – Infantry, Cavalry, Uhlans & Camp Scenes, c.1890 3. Austro-Hungarian Army Lithograph – Infantry, Cavalry & Artillery, c.1890 Description: Set of three antique hand-coloured lithograph prints depicting detailed military scenes from the late 19th century, featuring the German Army and the Austro-Hungarian Army. Each plate presents multiple figures in full uniform, shown in active and ceremonial roles, with vivid colours and fine detail capturing the style and function of each unit. The first lithograph focuses on the German Army, showing a Guard trumpeter on horseback, lancers in action, Bavarian Uhlans on parade, and soldiers fording a river on horseback and by boat. The lively action and contrasting uniforms illustrate both the ceremonial splendour and the practical manoeuvres of the cavalry. The second lithograph depicts a mix of German infantry and cavalry units, including sharpshooters in the field, a guard cuirassier, a train soldier, a lancer, and a trumpeter. Background scenes show soldiers resting in camp and mounted officers in full regalia. The plate highlights the diversity of the Imperial German Army’s branches during the late 19th century. The third lithograph presents the Austro-Hungarian Army, illustrating artillery, infantry, and cavalry troops in various roles. Figures include a cannoneer of a horse-drawn battery, field artillery officer, infantry officers and soldiers, sanitary staff, a pleiner, Landwehr dragoons, and a dragoon in marching order. Each figure is carefully labeled, offering valuable reference for collectors and historians of Central European military uniforms. Together, these prints provide a vivid and historically accurate portrayal of German and Austro-Hungarian military forces in the decades before World War I. They are of interest to uniformologists, military historians, and collectors of 19th-century prints. The hand colouring adds depth and vibrancy, making them suitable for framing as decorative and educational display pieces. Condition: Fair to good for age, with light toning and occasional edge wear due to age and handling. Colours remain rich and well-preserved. Framing tips: Mount together in a triple-aperture frame for a striking set, or frame individually with dark wood or walnut mouldings and a cream mat to enhance the vivid uniform colours. Technique: Hand-coloured lithograph Maker: Unknown, Germany/Austria-Hungary, circa 1890

French Antique Franco-Prussian War Painting of Cuirassiers by Paul Perboyre
Located in Shippensburg, PA
PAUL EMILE LÉON PERBOYRE French, 1851-1929 Cuirassiers Sharing Wine with Rural Countryman Oil on canvas signed lower left "Perboyre" Item # 309ULM18A A rich historical painting that captures the heart and reality of the Franco-Prussian conflict, the scene depicts a troop of Cuirassiers stopping for the afternoon in a non-descript field in the French countryside. Presumably the owner of the field, an older man has come out in the heat of the afternoon to greet the soldiers with a basket of wine bottles, offering a glass to the officers while chatting casually with them. Perhaps he is a local guide offering a sense of what the soldiers might expect in the rural countryside, but more likely it is simply a moment of reprieve in the idyllic countryside and a distinct juxtaposition to the intensity and drama of Perboyre's battle scenes. The Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) was the last use of "cuirassiers" in the French army with uniforms characterized by the distinct helmets known as a "casque à crinière" featuring a plume of horsehair. The cuirassiers wore a breastplate (cuirass) and the red trousers were a standard part of the French military uniform...
