Girl on Hindeloopen Sleigh in Dutch Winter Dress, Hand-colored Lithograph - 1932
About the Item
Girl on Hindeloopen Sleigh in Dutch Winter Dress, 1932
This exquisite hand-colored lithograph, titled “Plate I: Hindeloopen,” originates from the rare 1932 folio 'The National Costumes of Holland', created by Gratiane de Gardilanne and Elizabeth Whitney Moffatt. Only 500 copies of this folio were printed for commercial use, making each plate a scarce and collectible artifact of early 20th-century ethnographic illustration.
The print depicts two women in traditional winter attire from the harbor town of Hindeloopen on the former Zuiderzee, now part of Friesland. The right-hand figure is a young girl, seated joyfully on a painted Hindeloopen sleigh, a striking object in itself, embellished with colorful motifs. She wears a “kassakijntje,” a short coat of checked Indian cotton with distinctive purple and blue coloring, signifying that she is in slight mourning. Her costume is layered with a blue woollen apron, red-and-black fichu, and striped sash, and her hair is braided with ribbons known as “frisselsnoer.” She holds spiked poles in either hand to propel the sleigh.
The standing woman wears a long coat known as a “wenkte,” fashioned from flowered chintz and trimmed with an embroidered band called a “langet.” Her headdress includes a white cap and red scarf, with a golden “naald” or plaque securing her fichu. She carries a traditional wooden skate in her hand, reinforcing the wintery character of the scene.
The lithograph was printed in full color by the esteemed firm Vincent, Brooks, Day & Son in London, known for their exceptional chromolithographic work. The technique used here combines painterly softness with precise detail, especially evident in the textile patterns and facial expressions.
Condition and Framing Tips:
The print remains in excellent vintage condition with strong color retention and no visible tears or stains. Given its age and rarity, framing under UV-protective glass is recommended. A double mat—neutral outer and a deep red or navy inner—can draw out the rich tones of the garments. A simple black or walnut frame will complement both traditional and modern interiors while preserving the print’s historical integrity.

Jan Evertsen – Dutch Admiral in Battle Dress, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph
This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph portrays Jan Evertsen, a prominent admiral in the Dutch navy during the seventeenth century. Born in 1600 in Vlissingen, Evertsen was part of a well-known naval family and fought with distinction during the Anglo-Dutch Wars. He rose through the ranks to become lieutenant admiral of Zeeland. He was killed in action during the St James’s Day Battle in 1666, remembered as a brave and loyal defender of the Dutch Republic.
The print shows Evertsen on the deck of a warship, fully clad in richly detailed armor. He holds a command baton and rests one hand confidently on his sword. A large cannon looms behind him, along with nautical equipment and the curve of the ship’s structure, grounding the portrait in a powerful naval context. His determined expression and posture reflect his leadership and courage at sea.
Drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht, the lithograph features strong lines, hand-applied color, and an elegant composition that highlights the valor and historical significance of this Dutch naval hero.
