About the Item
Good Samaritan Engraving – Luke X Helping the Injured Man 1735
This antique engraving illustrates the Parable of the Good Samaritan from the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 10, published in 1735. The scene shows the compassionate Samaritan tending to the wounds of a robbed and beaten traveller. The Samaritan, wearing a cap and tunic, gently supports the injured man’s head with one hand while pouring oil or wine into his wounds with the other, showing care and urgency. The traveller lies on the ground, partially undressed, his muscular body limp from injury and exhaustion.
In the background, under a sky filled with softly engraved clouds, stands the Samaritan’s donkey saddled and ready to carry the man to safety. Beyond the trees and hills lies a distant walled town, indicating their journey’s destination. The detailed foliage, rolling landscape, and carefully rendered trees frame the figures and create a harmonious biblical composition.
This engraving was produced using the copper engraving technique, renowned for its fine linear precision, allowing intricate detail in the figures’ expressions, clothing folds, and surrounding landscape. Created in 1735, it was part of a Bible illustration series, each plate visualising New Testament parables and teachings to educate and inspire readers.
The Parable of the Good Samaritan is one of the most well-known Christian teachings about compassion beyond social boundaries. Its powerful moral lesson, combined with the artistic quality of this engraving, makes it significant for collectors of biblical prints, students of theology, and admirers of 18th-century engraving craftsmanship.
Condition summary: Good condition for its age. Light toning across the sheet with a warm cream hue. Some minor foxing spots, mainly to the right margin, and a faint water stain near the lower edge. No tears or repairs noted. Strong impression with clear lines and excellent detail. Paper remains firm and stable with ample margins.
Framing tips: This moving engraving will display beautifully in a classic dark wood, black, or mahogany frame to accentuate its tonal depth, combined with an off-white or antique cream mount to complement the aged paper. For a traditional and elegant presentation, a gold beaded inner frame may be added. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the fine engraved details and prevent fading over time.
