Grand Master of the Order of St. Michael in Ceremonial Attire, 1791 Engraving

About the Item

Grand Master of the Order of St. Michael in Ceremonial Attire, 18th Century Engraving This hand-colored engraving depicts the Grand Master of the Order of St. Michael, adorned in a richly detailed ceremonial outfit. The figure exudes nobility and prestige, dressed in a luxurious cape embellished with gold and blue brocade patterns and the iconic cross of the order. His aristocratic stance, feathered hat, and commanding pose reflect the grandeur associated with his role as a protector of divine honor. The intricacy of the artwork highlights the importance of ceremonial dress in conveying power and authority. This engraving is part of Christian Friedrich Schwan’s celebrated work, Illustrations of all spiritual and secular orders, originally published as individual booklets between 1779 and 1791. Schwan’s series serves as an important historical documentation of knightly orders, blending artistic mastery with cultural history. The artist's attention to detail captures the prestige and symbolism of the Order of St. Michael, a chivalric institution with roots in the French monarchy. The print represents 18th-century European engraving at its finest, combining historical significance with exceptional artistic skill. It is a rare and collectible piece for those interested in the history of knighthood, ceremonial costumes, or the art of engraving. Condition report: Overall in good condition, showing some light age toning and minor spotting typical for its age. The edges are well-preserved with minimal wear. The hand-coloring remains vivid, with no significant fading. Framing tip: Pair this engraving with a gold-accented frame for a regal display. A double mat in cream and royal blue will enhance the rich tones in the cape and cross, providing a sophisticated presentation that matches its historical elegance.

Hand-Colored Engraving of the Ceiling of the Church of Santa Costanza in Frame
Located in Pembroke, MA
A large, nicely-framed Italian hand-colored engraving in tones of terracotta and black (17th century, with more recent matte and frame) by Pietro Bartoli. The engraving depicts the mosaic ceiling in the church of Santa Costanza outside of Rome, which was studied by the ecclesiatical archaeologist Giovanni Ciampini. The mosaic ceiling no longer exists, but is known through various depictions of the artwork, such as this engraving. The images include Christian imagery including the sacrifice of Cain and Abel and possibly Noah building the ark. The upper row of mosaics is believed to represent scenes from the New Testament, with caryatids dividing the ceiling into twelve segments. The engraving is captioned in Latin: "Opus Musiuum olim in tholo Templi, quod vulgo creditur Bacchi, nunc Sancte Constantie extra Portam Piam cariatides, et Telamones in duodecium dividant Segmenta, ubi plura autumnales ferias, et piscationis Genium demostrant, iuxta interpretionem Ciampini qui mediatatem exhibet Veterum monum." In the 17th century, the church of Santa Costanza was known as the "Temple of Bacchus," and was the site of rowdy Bacchic festivals until Pope Clement XI banned the rites in 1720. Pietro Santo...
