About the Item

Grand Mogol’s Palace & Mosque – Engraved View by Chatelain, Atlas Historique 1719 This elaborate antique engraving titled Vue & Description du Palais du Grand Mogol, de la Mosquée, de ses Divertissemens presents a sweeping and detailed depiction of the opulent palace complex of the Mughal emperor in India. The composition captures the splendor and vastness of the Mughal court, portraying bustling activity around the mosque, palace gardens, ceremonial grounds, and richly adorned architecture. Published in 1719 as part of Atlas Historique by Henri Abraham Chatelain, this plate reflects the European fascination with the exotic grandeur of the East during the early 18th century. The Chatelain family—Henri Abraham, his father Zacharie, and brother Zacharie Jr.—produced some of the most ambitious historical atlases of their time, blending scholarly content with decorative appeal. Their works served not only as cartographic records but also as visual encyclopedias of global cultures, royal courts, religions, and customs. This particular engraving provides more than a topographical view—it is a dynamic narrative of life in the imperial Mughal palace. Figures populate the scene in distinct groupings: soldiers at attention, nobles in procession, dancers, entertainers, guards, animals, and pilgrims, all laid out in hierarchical and spatial harmony. The mosque dominates one corner of the print, while the palace complex opens into meticulously landscaped courtyards and terraces, capturing the blend of Islamic and Indo-Persian architecture that defined Mughal imperial style. Rich in symbolic detail and narrative vignettes, this engraving is not only a documentary visualisation but also a product of Enlightenment-era curiosity about the wider world. It’s a rare and impressive piece for collectors of early world views, Indo-Islamic architecture, or early 18th-century engraving. Condition report: Very good condition for its age. Crisp impression with fine linework and minimal age toning. Center fold as issued. Minor edge wear consistent with 18th-century folio engravings. Framing tips: A large, dark-stained wood frame—such as ebony or mahogany—will anchor the visual complexity of the print. Consider a double mat in ivory and charcoal to emphasize the contrast and structure. UV-protective glass is recommended due to the fine inkwork.
