About the Item

The Coronation of His Majesty George IV – July 19, 1821 – Hand-Coloured Engraving by Matthew Dubourg, 1822 Vivid hand-coloured engraving depicting the coronation of King George IV at Westminster Abbey on July 19, 1821, engraved by Matthew Dubourg after the original design, and published in 1822. The scene captures the moment of the Recognition, when the assembled congregation acknowledged the monarch as rightful ruler. The grand Gothic architecture of the Abbey forms a majestic backdrop, its soaring columns and stained-glass windows framing the crowded tiers of dignitaries, clergy, peers, and spectators. The richly detailed costumes, from ermine-lined robes to elaborate uniforms, add splashes of red, blue, and gold, enhancing the sense of regal splendour. The raised platform at the centre holds the Coronation Chair and regalia, while processional figures and guards flank the ceremonial space. Dubourg’s engraving conveys both the pomp and the careful choreography of the event, making it an important visual record of early 19th-century British ceremonial life. Condition: Good with strong, bright colouring. Light overall toning to paper and minor handling marks and two small tears in margins. Slight age-related foxing in places, mainly in the borders. Plate impression clear and paper stable. Framing tips: Best presented in a gilt or dark wood frame with a warm off-white mount to complement the rich hand-colouring. Keep margins visible to display the full engraved title line. Technique: Hand-coloured aquatint and engraving Maker: Matthew Dubourg (fl. 1838), England, published 1822
