About the Item
Original engraving of Francis William Grant (1778-1853), of Castle Grant, Elgin, Scotland. He was a Colonel in the Inverness militia from 1803 to 1813, after serving in commissions in Ireland in 1798 and at Gibraltar in 1800-1. He served in parliament from 1802 to April of 1840, representing a range of constituencies. Grant continued his father’s work of local improvement and was reputedly the greatest exponent of afforestation in Scotland in the 19th century. A copy of this engraving is part of the Yale University Library collection.
