About the Item

Hydraulic Machine of Kew Gardens & Chiswick Grotto – Le Rouge, c.1785 Description: This antique copper engraving, titled "Machine Hydraulique dans les Jardins de Kew," offers a detailed technical and artistic representation of the hydraulic water-lifting system in the Kew Gardens, alongside a charming view of the Grotte de Chiswick. The print comes from the influential 18th-century publication *Jardins Anglo-Chinois à la Mode*, produced by the renowned cartographer and engraver Georg Louis Le Rouge. The illustration showcases a sectional view of a sophisticated hydraulic system featuring an Archimedean screw, labeled “Visse d’Archimede,” powered by a gear mechanism to lift water from a lower reservoir (aa: Puits) through to a higher level. The cutaway reveals the caisson (cc), valve system (d: Vanne), and general junction (e: Jonction générale), providing remarkable insight into the technical innovation of the period. Above the system, a labeled truss structure frames the machinery, reflecting the elegant engineering architecture typical of the Enlightenment. To the left, a charming vignette of the “Grotte de Chiswick” is nestled in a wooded setting. This feature connects the hydraulic functionality with the decorative and romantic aesthetic of English landscape gardens, reflecting the broader shift from formal French designs to more natural, picturesque layouts during the 18th century. Georg Louis Le Rouge’s work is considered one of the most significant contributions to the history of European garden design. His engravings document not only landscaping trends but also technological marvels embedded within them—such as this fascinating hydraulic system, which supported water displays and irrigation in the famed Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. An excellent piece for collectors of garden history, Enlightenment engineering, or 18th-century technical engravings.
