Indigenous People of King George's Harbour and Jervis Bay, New Holland, 1836

About the Item

Title: Indigenous People of King George's Harbour and Jervis Bay, New Holland Description: This lithograph, circa 1836, presents two detailed scenes of Indigenous life in New Holland (modern-day Australia), specifically at King George's Harbour and Jervis Bay. The upper panel features three male figures—one holding a spear, another draped in a cloak, and a third proudly displaying a fish. In the background, a group of Indigenous people can be seen engaged in daily activities, adding depth to this cultural representation. The lower panel depicts a more intimate grouping of three individuals, including a young woman and two men. Their attire consists of traditional cloaks and draped garments, emphasizing the simplicity and practicality of their clothing. The figures are shown in naturalistic poses, with one seated on a rock and another leaning casually against a tree. Their expressions and gestures convey a sense of calm and connection to their environment. Created by Louis Auguste de Sainson as part of Dumont d’Urville’s expedition, this lithograph was later included in Brodtmann’s *Entdeckungs, Reise der Franzosischen Corvette Astrolabe*. It serves as both an ethnographic study and a visual document of early encounters between Europeans and Indigenous Australians. Condition Report: Marginal foxing and light toning, with minor handling wear at edges. The image remains sharp and detailed, showcasing strong contrasts. Overall in very good condition.
