About the Item
Italian Renaissance Architectural Frieze Print with Virtus Motto, 19th Century
This vibrant 19th-century chromolithograph is Plate 47 from the renowned German decorative arts series *Ornamentenschatz* (The Treasury of Ornament), designed by H. Dolmetsch and published by J. Hoffmann in Stuttgart. It offers a richly detailed rendering of Renaissance façade decoration as seen in Italian palazzi and civic buildings, capturing the grandeur and refinement of classical ornamentation during the revivalist period of the late 1800s.
The central theme of this plate is a monumental frieze design adorned with classical motifs such as garlands, griffins, festoons, medallions, satyrs, acanthus foliage, and mythological figures. A Latin inscription, *Virtus*, meaning virtue, is prominently framed in green and gold scrollwork, underscoring the Renaissance focus on humanist values and moral excellence.
Flanking the frieze are two elaborately decorated architectural columns wrapped in stylized foliage and crowned with putti. These columns act as both structural and decorative anchors in the composition, reinforcing the harmony of proportion and symbolism so characteristic of Renaissance architecture.
The print is an ideal reference for those interested in classical revival design, mural painting, trompe-l'œil, or period restoration. It is also an exceptional choice for collectors of antique architectural documentation or those wishing to add a striking visual centerpiece to an interior inspired by classical or grand European aesthetics.
Condition:
This plate is in excellent condition, with crisp lines, strong color, and very minimal signs of aging. The paper is clean and free from foxing, tears, or repairs. Slight toning may be visible in the margins, but the image area is bright and well-preserved.
Framing Advice:
For maximum impact, frame this piece with a wide mat in a warm neutral or ivory tone. A gilded or antiqued wood frame will enhance the classical detailing and rich palette. Consider non-reflective UV glass to preserve the color intensity over time. This plate also pairs well with companion prints from the same series for a gallery-style installation.
An exceptional example of historic European design publishing, this print captures the elegance and sophistication of Renaissance ornament while standing as a piece of fine decorative art in its own right.
