Japanese Geisha Portrait Print: Vibrant Kimono and Serene Poise, c.1882

About the Item

Title: Japanese Geisha Portrait Print: Vibrant Kimono and Serene Poise Description: This captivating Japanese print is a masterful example of traditional artistry, depicting a serene geisha adorned in a stunning kimono. The kimono’s elaborate pattern of colorful flowers and bamboo motifs highlights the sophisticated textile design typical of the Edo period, which was known for its refined aesthetic and attention to detail. The print is bordered by a beautiful blue floral pattern, adding further elegance and framing the central figure in a manner reminiscent of classic Japanese hanging scrolls. Created with an exquisite balance of color and form, this portrait demonstrates the technical mastery of Japanese woodblock printing and lithography. The geisha’s delicate posture, her graceful composure, and the exquisite layers of her flowing garment create a vivid impression of traditional Japanese beauty and cultural refinement. This print was lithographed by W. Greve in Berlin and published by Sampson Low & Co., representing a cross-cultural appreciation for Japanese art in the late 19th to early 20th century. The artist’s seal and signature are also present, adding authenticity and a direct link to the original creative vision. Collectors of Japanese prints or those interested in traditional Japanese dress and art will find this work a valuable addition to their collection. It captures both the elegance and the quiet dignity of the geisha figure, emblematic of Japan’s cultural and artistic heritage. Condition Report: The print is in very good condition with slight toning and a few faint foxing marks along the border, as expected for its age. The colors remain vibrant and the image is crisp and clear. Framing Tips: This portrait would be beautifully highlighted with a classic dark wooden frame and a cream or light ivory mat to emphasize the rich colors of the kimono. Consider a slightly wider mat to accentuate the blue border and add depth to the presentation.

Kaoru Kawano Signed Large Japanese Woodblock Print Dancing Geisha Figure Eshima
By Kaoru Kawano
Located in Studio City, CA
A beautiful work by famed Japanese artist Kaoru Kawano who was known for his whimsical portrayals of women, children, and animals. Stylistically, he was one of the first Japanese artists to combine Western-style elements with the traditional methods of woodblock printmaking. This work is known as "Dancing Figure (Eshima)" The print is signed (in white ink within the image) and sealed (in red) by Kawano. This work is a quite rare self-printed lifetime double dai Oban large-size print. The quality and colors are striking. It is likely from a limited edition and perhaps numbered on the lower margin (we can not verify as it was previously framed but we are confident that this is the case). A very beautiful and rich image. Would make for a great addition to any Japanese art and print collection or Stand-out accent work in about any setting. Junichiro Sekino Signed Limited Edition Japanese Woodblock Print Girl in Kimono
By Junichiro Sekino
Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderfully composed and colored, limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Junichiro Sekino. This print, which is titled "Profile/ Portrait of Young Girl in Kimono", is signed and sealed/ stamped in red at the lower right. It was created in 1957 and comes from a limited edition of 100 prints (the exact number of this particular print is likely listed in pencil below the matt but we have not removed the print from the frame to confirm the exact number). An exquisite and rare/hard-to-find work. The detail in the girl's kimono is quite beautiful. Junichiro Sekino was largely considered, along with Kiyoshi Saito, to be one of Japan's paramount 20th-century master print artists. Both were prominent leaders of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Sekino's works can be found in many museums including: The Museum of Modern Art, N. Y., the Art Institute Chicago, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, the British Museum, and the Portland Art Museum among many other Fine museums throughout the world. A version of this image can be found in the Harvard Art...
