About the Item

Japanese Lady Costume Print – Antique Hand-Colored Lithograph, 1854 This antique hand-colored lithograph, published in 1854 in Album des Voyages Anciens et Modernes by Martial Ardant Frères, depicts a Japanese woman of distinction in elegant ceremonial attire. The figure is shown standing gracefully, holding a green folding fan, her costume richly decorated with floral and geometric motifs that highlight the refinement of Japanese dress. She wears a long patterned robe with a white ground embroidered with small red blossoms, trimmed in gold and paired with a blue sash draped diagonally across her chest. Beneath the robe, her skirt is adorned with bold zigzag patterns in shades of red, orange, and lilac, contrasting with delicately rendered floral ornamentation. Her hair is elegantly styled and decorated with a small gold ornament and a black crest, emphasizing her social status. She also wears pearl bracelets and a necklace, enhancing her image as a woman of refinement and distinction. In mid-19th century Europe, Japan was still a mysterious land, as it had only limited contact with the outside world until the mid-1850s. Costume plates such as this one played a significant role in shaping European perceptions of Japanese culture, combining ethnographic observation with artistic imagination. This plate reflects both fascination with the exotic and admiration for the elegance of Japanese dress. The lithograph is finely executed with brilliant hand-applied colors, particularly the contrast between the deep blue sash, green fan, and richly patterned garments. It provides not only a decorative representation but also an important historical insight into how Japanese attire was perceived in 19th-century Europe. For collectors today, this work holds value as part of the broader tradition of costume illustration, as well as for its direct connection to early Western representations of Japan. Condition report: Mild foxing and light toning in the margins, consistent with age. Image clean with vibrant, well-preserved colors. Plate mark visible. Wide margins intact. Framing tips: A gilt frame with a pale cream or ivory mat will enhance the elegance of the attire. A dark wood frame with a blue or green mat can highlight the sash and fan, making the composition more vivid. Technique: Hand-colored lithograph Maker: Martial Ardant Frères, Paris & Limoges, 1854
