Original heliogravure from the first issue of Verve (Vol. 1, No. 1, 1937), the renowned Paris-based art journal published by Tériade. This piece reproduces a fragment of a medieval tapestry reinterpreted by French artist Jean-Denis Malclès Sauvage, known for his stylized, theatrical visual language and decorative imagination.
The image evokes the lavish textile traditions of the Middle Ages, particularly referencing the famous The Lady and the Unicorn series. Sauvage reinterprets the mythic court scene with refined draftsmanship and a surreal touch, highlighting the costuming and vegetal patterning in intricate detail.
Printed in rich monochrome tones using the heliogravure technique, this edition is part of a landmark publication featuring contributions from artists such as Matisse, Bonnard, Brassaï, and Man Ray.
