About the Item

Title: Jesus as Good Shepherd Engraving – John X Protects Flock c.1735 Description: This deeply symbolic antique engraving titled “Christ is the good shepherd, he giveth his life for the sheep” illustrates John Chapter X, where Jesus declares himself the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for his flock. Created circa 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving portrays Christ in a powerful pastoral scene defending his sheep from wolves. At the centre, Jesus is depicted with a radiant halo, holding a shepherd’s crook, and stepping forward protectively to confront a lunging wolf attacking the sheep. His posture and expression convey calm authority and sacrificial care. In the foreground, sheep scatter in fear while another wolf flees to the right. In the background, a distant shepherd attempts to rally the panicked flock, while a fortified town, bridge, and trees set the scene within a rich biblical landscape. This engraving is executed with fine copperplate technique, renowned for its precise linear detailing, cross-hatching, and tonal shading that convey texture, depth, and narrative drama. Though unsigned, it aligns stylistically with prints engraved after designs by Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart for English folio Bibles of the early 18th century. Such illustrations served as theological teaching tools and visual sermons in Protestant households, reinforcing scripture readings with emblematic imagery. Collectors value such engravings for their religious, historical, and artistic significance, offering insights into 18th-century Protestant visual theology, devotional practice, and the importance of Christ as protector within Christian doctrine. Condition summary: Fair to good condition with light age toning, a prominent water stain along the top margin and upper left area, and minor foxing mainly in the margins. The plate impression remains strong, with engraved details well preserved. Framing tips: Frame this engraving with a dark wood or black moulding with gold inner edging to enhance its classical religious presentation. Use a warm cream or ivory mount board to harmonise with the aged paper tones and minimise visibility of the top margin stain while emphasising the central scene. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve the engraving’s fine line work and prevent further paper ageing. This engraving will display beautifully in a study, library, or gallery wall of biblical prints, adding narrative depth and devotional strength to any collection.
