George W. Aikman (1830 - 1905), Edinburgh landscape artist and engraver. Born in Edinburgh 20th May 1830, 9th child of an engraver, also named George Aikman (1788-1865). The younger George received an early and practical education in art, by assisting his father in producing the plates and illustrations for the seventh edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. George was privately educated and then later attended the Royal High School, Edinburgh, apprenticed to his father, attended the Trustees' Academy, and later becoming a partner in the business. By 1850 Aikman was showing work at the Scottish Academy exhibitions, but it was not until 1870 that he abandoned business for painting. In 1880 he was elected an A.R.S.A.
