About the Item
Joyful Children's Round Dance in Spakenburg Costume – Dutch Folk Art Print
This delightful hand-colored print from the 1932 limited edition *The National Costumes of Holland* by Gratiane de Gardilanne and Elizabeth Whitney Moffatt (only 500 copies printed) captures a jubilant moment from the village of Spakenburg or Bunschoten, where a group of young children dances in a traditional round. Full of movement, color, and character, this scene presents a vibrant view into Dutch folk life, while also providing a glimpse into the everyday and ceremonial dress of these fishing communities.
The children are shown mid-dance, hand in hand, beaming with energy and mischief—a visual echo of the plate’s accompanying text, which humorously warns that joining in their games might not be wise, as these youngsters are known for their exuberance. Their traditional attire, carefully documented and beautifully illustrated, draws on the detailed costume studies found in Plates XXXIV and XXXV.
At left, a young girl wears the more muted mourning version of the regional dress, distinguished by a sober-toned **kroplap** and the dusky color of her pinafore bodice—perhaps a subtle narrative of loss woven into a joyful communal ritual. Across from her, a lively companion dons a vibrant red and white checkered blouse with puffed floral sleeves and a full navy skirt, her ensemble reflecting the village’s preference for cheerfully embellished attire when not in mourning.
A boy stands confidently at the rear, clad in full black **breeches** and a smart blue-and-white striped blouse, topped with a dark peaked cap—a “Sunday best” look seen also in historical Dutch prints. Centered in the group is another child dressed in the classic red check pattern, paired with a black apron and pale floral sleeves, back turned, but unmistakably caught in the joy of the moment.
This joyful yet culturally rich image is printed on fine paper and is beautifully preserved. The surface is clean and free of foxing or tears, with only light toning near the edges consistent with age.
Condition: Excellent. Original 1932 hand-colored print with vivid hues, clean margins, and only minor edge toning.
Framing suggestion: This energetic scene would be enhanced by a light oak or natural wood frame, ideally floated to show the plate’s full border. For added charm, consider pairing with other regional costume prints for a gallery-style display celebrating Dutch heritage and design.
