About the Item
"Justice and Diversity in the Early Modern World"
Description:
This detailed engraving presents a vivid tableau in two distinct parts, each illustrating significant cultural and historical narratives. On the left, a Persian tribunal unfolds with the king seated majestically on a throne, overseeing a brutal punishment where a governor is blinded—a stark depiction of justice and authority in ancient Persia.
To the right, the scene transitions to a peaceful landscape populated by the Khoikhoi and Guineans, showcasing the everyday life and diversity of indigenous cultures. This artwork, complete with legends in both Dutch and French, is part of a broader series titled "Les Indes Orientales et Occidentales et autres lieux," capturing the varied and rich tapestry of global cultures and interactions during the early modern period. This piece not only serves as a historical document but also as a reflection on the complexities of governance, punishment, and cultural diversity.
Creator: Printmaker: Romeyn de Hooghe, Publisher: Pieter van der Aa
Place of Manufacture: Leiden
Date: 1682 - 1733
The engraving is associated with two prominent figures in the art and publishing world of the 17th and early 18th centuries: Romeyn de Hooghe and Pieter van der Aa.
### Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708)
Romeyn de Hooghe was a Dutch Baroque artist known for his prolific and versatile artistic output. He worked as an engraver, painter, and draftsman. De Hooghe's engravings are renowned for their intricate detail and dynamic composition, making him one of the most important and innovative printmakers of his time. His works often included political, historical, and allegorical scenes, reflecting the complex social and political climate of the Dutch Golden Age. De Hooghe was also known for his satirical edge, often infusing his artwork with a keen critical perspective on contemporary issues.
### Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733)
Pieter van der Aa was an influential Dutch publisher based in Leiden, known for producing maps, atlases, and illustrated works. His publishing career was marked by the ambitious project of issuing atlases that incorporated a wide range of geographic knowledge and exotic illustrations from around the world. Van der Aa's works were highly esteemed for their decorative and detailed plates, which catered to the tastes of the European elite who were eager for knowledge about distant lands. His publications are notable for their meticulous attention to detail and their role in disseminating geographical and historical knowledge during the Age of Exploration.
### Collaboration and Impact
The collaboration between Romeyn de Hooghe as an engraver and Pieter van der Aa as a publisher brought together two masters of their respective crafts. Their works, such as the engravings depicting scenes from the East Indies, not only served as decorative pieces but also as educational tools that helped shape European perceptions of the wider world. These works are significant historical documents, reflecting the interplay between art, exploration, and commerce in the early modern period.

By Romeyn de Hooghe
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique portrait titled 'Paulus Samosatenus'. Portrait of Paul of Samosata. Paul of Samosata (lived from 200 to 275 AD) was Bishop of Antioch, Palestine from 260 to 268. He was a believer in monarchianism, a doctrine about the Trinity; his teachings anticipate adoptionism. His Monarchianist teachings aroused strong opposition in the church. He was also accused of corruption on a grand scale. This print originates from 'Historie der kerken en ketteren van den beginne des Nieuwen Testaments tot aan het jaar onses Heeren 1688. In het Neederduyts vertaald' by G. Arnold.
Artists and Engravers: Gottfried Arnold (1666 – 1714) was a German Lutheran theologian and historian. Etching by Romeyn de Hooghe.
The antique portrait titled 'Paulus Samosatenus' is a depiction of Paul of Samosata, a historical figure prominent in the early Christian church during the third century AD.
The portrait presents Paul of Samosata in a dignified manner, reflecting his significance as a key figure in early Christian history. About: Jane's Addiction:
Jane's Addiction is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1985. The band consists of vocalist Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Chris Chaney. The band has been credited for inspiring the alternative rock movement of the 1990s. They have released four studio albums, including their breakthrough album Nothing's Shocking in 1988 and Ritual de lo Habitual in 1990.
The band was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1985. Founder and singer Perry Farrell found bassist Eric Avery, who then brought on drummer Stephen Perkins and finally guitarist Dave Navarro, after auditioning many players. Jane’s Addiction became a sensation on the Los Angeles club scene and a staple on the Sunset Strip. The band’s original line-up featured Perry Farrell (vocals), Dave Navarro (guitar), Eric Avery (bass) and Stephen Perkins (drums). Jane’s Addiction was one of the first bands to emerge from the early 1990s alternative rock movement to gain mainstream media attention and commercial success in the United States. They recorded Nothing’s Shocking in 1988 (so they are celebrating 25-years in 2013!) and Ritual De Lo Habitual in 1990, both on Warner Brothers Records. Jane’s Addiction broke up in 1991 and their farewell tour coincided with Farrell founding the first Lollapalooza festival, an alternative rock showcase and lifestyle festival that is still to this day one of the most influential music festivals in the world. As a result, Jane’s Addiction became icons of what is dubbed the “Alternative Nation.” In 1997 Jane’s Addiction united briefly with Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Flea filling in on bass. Then in 2001 the band reconnected with Chris Chaney on bass and released the album Strays, produced by legendary producer Bob Ezrin. “Superhero” from this album became the theme song for HBO’s hit show Entourage. Farrell, Navarro, Perkins and Chaney returned in to release their fourth studio album, The Great Escape Artist, and toured the world.
Jane’s Addiction is regarded as one of the most influential acts in alternative music. Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine...
