Knight of the Order of the Annunciation in Ceremonial Attire – Engraving 1791

About the Item

Knight of the Order of the Annunciation in Ceremonial Attire – 18th Century Engraving This exquisite 18th-century hand-colored engraving depicts a Knight of the Order of the Annunciation (Ordine della Santissima Annunziata) in his ceremonial attire. Adorned with a richly embroidered blue and red cloak and a distinctive feathered hat, the knight radiates prestige and elegance. The emblematic medallion, prominently displayed on his chest, represents the order’s deep Marian devotion. His stance conveys a regal dignity, symbolic of the order’s high rank in Savoyard nobility. This work originates from the celebrated series "Illustrations of all Spiritual and Secular Orders" (Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden), created by Christian Friedrich Schwan and published in Mannheim between 1779 and 1791. The series meticulously documents the unique attire of various chivalric and religious orders across Europe, combining historical accuracy with artistic finesse. The engraving is an exceptional example of late 18th-century European printmaking, with vibrant watercolor embellishments that enhance its intricate details. Its historical and artistic value makes it a must-have for collectors of chivalric orders, historical costume, or fine prints. Condition This engraving is in good condition, with only minor spotting and age-related wear. The colors remain vibrant, and the paper is stable. Some light foxing on the margins is present, which does not affect the image itself. Presentation Tip To elevate its historical charm, consider framing this piece with a double mat in off-white and royal blue, paired with a dark wooden frame featuring subtle gilded accents. This combination will enhance the engraving’s rich colors and make it an outstanding focal point for any room.

Hand-Colored Engraving of the Ceiling of the Church of Santa Costanza in Frame
Located in Pembroke, MA
A large, nicely-framed Italian hand-colored engraving in tones of terracotta and black (17th century, with more recent matte and frame) by Pietro Bartoli. The engraving depicts the mosaic ceiling in the church of Santa Costanza outside of Rome, which was studied by the ecclesiatical archaeologist Giovanni Ciampini. The mosaic ceiling no longer exists, but is known through various depictions of the artwork, such as this engraving. The images include Christian imagery including the sacrifice of Cain and Abel and possibly Noah building the ark. The upper row of mosaics is believed to represent scenes from the New Testament, with caryatids dividing the ceiling into twelve segments. The engraving is captioned in Latin: "Opus Musiuum olim in tholo Templi, quod vulgo creditur Bacchi, nunc Sancte Constantie extra Portam Piam cariatides, et Telamones in duodecium dividant Segmenta, ubi plura autumnales ferias, et piscationis Genium demostrant, iuxta interpretionem Ciampini qui mediatatem exhibet Veterum monum." In the 17th century, the church of Santa Costanza was known as the "Temple of Bacchus," and was the site of rowdy Bacchic festivals until Pope Clement XI banned the rites in 1720. Pietro Santo...
