About the Item
A Lady’s Horse – From Cassell’s Book of the Horse, 1873, after Monpezat
An elegant 1873 chromolithograph from Cassell’s Book of the Horse, depicting “A Lady’s Horse – The Property of the Late Earl of Pembroke,” after an original painting by Monpezat. The scene shows a refined chestnut horse with a white blaze and stockings, gracefully stepping forward under the control of a side-saddle rider dressed in a traditional black riding habit and top hat. The rider holds a crop and the reins with poise, set against a backdrop of soft countryside hues.
The image reflects the Victorian ideal of equestrian elegance, when riding side-saddle was considered an essential accomplishment for upper-class women. The depiction of the horse shows both power and refinement, with attention given to the animal’s muscular conformation and spirited yet controlled movement. Works like this were intended to celebrate the bond between horse and rider as well as to display fine equine breeding, here associated with the aristocracy.
Published by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co., Cassell’s Book of the Horse was one of the most comprehensive Victorian works on horse care, breeds, training, and equestrian culture. Plates such as this were printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son, one of the leading lithographic firms of the era, and are notable for their rich colours and fine detail.
Condition report:
Very good condition. Colours bright and well-preserved, with only minor toning to the margins. Presented in a pale green mat with a dark green inner border that complements the tones of the print.
Framing tips:
A gilt or dark walnut frame will suit the Victorian character of the print, while a more minimal black frame can give it a modern presentation. Use UV-protective glass to maintain the vibrancy of the chromolithography.
