About the Item

Laos Siamois – Orchids and Epiphytes of Laos c.1873 This large and vividly coloured print depicts a lush collection of orchids and epiphytes found in the forests of Laos. The composition features numerous orchid species clinging to tree trunks and branches, their aerial roots intertwining and hanging down. Delicate flowers in shades of pink, purple, yellow, and white bloom among broad green leaves, capturing the botanical richness of the tropical Southeast Asian landscape. The detailed illustration highlights each plant’s unique structure, from clustered flowers to thick pseudobulbs and fine root systems, providing both aesthetic beauty and scientific accuracy. This chromolithograph was published between 1873 and 1875 in ‘Voyage d'exploration en Indo-Chine effectué pendant les années 1866, 1867 et 1868 par une Commission Française’ by Francis Garnier. Garnier, a French naval officer and explorer, led the expedition to chart the Mekong River in an effort to open trade routes into China and promote French colonial expansion while challenging British influence in Southeast Asia. His publication remains one of the most beautifully illustrated works on Indo-China, covering ethnography, landscapes, architecture, and botany. The technique used is chromolithography, involving multiple lithographic stones, each inked with different colours to achieve rich, vibrant illustrations with painterly depth. This method was especially suited for botanical subjects, allowing for detailed and naturalistic representations that served both decorative and scientific purposes. Condition summary: Very good condition with strong, vivid colours and clean paper. Minor age-toning and very light foxing near the edges, but no tears or repairs. Paper remains firm and well-preserved. Framing tips: This botanical print will stand out with a soft cream or pale green mount to enhance its natural tones. For framing, consider a light wood, oak, or bamboo-style frame to complement its botanical subject, or a gold frame for a classic decorative presentation. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the chromolithograph’s delicate pigments.
