Late 19th-Century French Equestrian Prints by Ernest Alexandre Bodoy, A. Legras

About the Item

Late 19th-Century French Equestrian chromolithograph prints by Ernest Alexandre Bodoy, A. Legras. Capturing the exhilarating energy of equestrian steeplechase scenes, as originally depicted by the artist Ernest Alexandre Bodoy. Each decorative print, produced by the Parisian printer A. Legras, showcases a jockey astride a powerful horse, mid-leap over a steeplechase barrier. The subjects, rendered in rich tones against a subtle faux bois painted background. Both prints bear Bodoy’s signature and the A. Legras logo. Each print measures 43.5 cm in height and 32 cm in width, preserved in its original frame. The frames are in fair to good condition, showing wear at the corners and minor chipping to the cream lacquer finish. Chromolithography, a colour printing technique popular in the 19th century, allowed these prints to maintain richly saturated hues and a sense of immediacy that is rare in traditional lithographs of the era. Known colloquially as "chromos," these prints represented an accessible form of popular art, vibrant and affordable, bringing fine art into many homes. A. Legras’s use of this technique reflects its commitment to high-quality reproductions, lending a striking fidelity to Bodoy’s dynamic scenes.
