About the Item
Le Mont Saint-Michel Original Etchings by Arthur Mayeur, Limited Edition 1926
This rare 1926 limited-edition portfolio by Arthur Mayeur, titled Le Mont Saint-Michel et ses abords (“Mont Saint-Michel and its Surroundings”), is an outstanding example of French regional art and book design of the early 20th century. The work brings together ten original etchings of the iconic Mont Saint-Michel, each plate individually numbered and signed by the artist, along with woodcut decorations and a printed introduction. Published in Paris by A. and M. Vernant and printed at the renowned École Municipale Estienne, this edition was strictly limited to 100 copies, of which this is copy number 49, printed on fine Van Gelder paper.
Arthur Mayeur’s etchings capture the dramatic coastal landscape of Mont Saint-Michel, the famous tidal island and abbey located off the coast of Normandy. His careful linework highlights the medieval architecture, winding streets, and dramatic tides that have made the site one of France’s most recognizable landmarks. Each print is protected by its original titled tissue guard, emphasizing the care given to presentation. The artist’s skill is equally evident in the accompanying woodcut decorations, which echo the style of medieval manuscript borders and further root the edition in the historic spirit of the subject.
This copy is made more special by Mayeur’s personal dedication, signed to “Monsieur & Madame Maréchal,” and accompanied by a charming card from the artist, handwritten with Christmas greetings for 1931. Such personal inscriptions are rare, making this an exceptional association copy.
The book is presented in its original cream-colored softcover binding, with printed wrappers and a glassine protective cover. The fragile glassine shows slight darkening and a small crease at the spine but is otherwise intact. The blue cloth slipcase with marbled sides is remarkably well preserved, with only minor rubbing, and continues to protect the contents securely. The etchings themselves remain in pristine condition, with strong impressions and no visible defects, making this one of the finest surviving sets.
For collectors of French illustrated books, regional art, or those with a special connection to Mont Saint-Michel, this edition is a highly desirable piece. It reflects both the artistic heritage of Normandy and the golden age of French fine press publishing between the wars.
Condition summary: Etchings in excellent condition with no foxing, toning, or tears. Soft covers very good, with glassine showing slight darkening and a small crease on the spine. Slipcase in very good condition with minimal rubbing.
Framing tips: Each of the ten signed etchings can be mounted and framed individually. They would look striking in simple black or dark wood frames with cream or light grey acid-free mats, emphasizing the detailed etching lines. Alternatively, a collector may wish to preserve the portfolio intact, displaying it in a custom archival box frame to showcase the binding and slipcase alongside one of the plates.
