This beautifully rendered 19th-century lithograph titled Les Sylphides is part of a series known as Étude de la Nature (Study of Nature), created to celebrate the artistic and idealized human form through classical and romantic aesthetics.
The composition features two young nude women in a serene landscape, one reclining on the grass and the other standing gracefully beside a rock, lightly draped in a translucent cloth. Their postures suggest a moment of peaceful reflection or intimate companionship, set against a lush wooded background with a still lake and distant hills.
The print was lithographed by Charpentier and printed by the renowned firm Bocquet Frères à Metz. It was published by T. Simonet in Paris, Passage Colbert, a known publisher of fine lithographs during the Romantic period. This particular sheet is numbered 13 in the series, suggesting it belonged to a larger portfolio or collection dedicated to anatomical and artistic studies of the female figure in natural settings.
In the 1830s and 1840s, French lithographic artists often explored themes from classical mythology, Arcadian landscapes, and poetic femininity. The word “sylphide” refers to a spirit of the air—delicate, ethereal beings often associated with Romantic ballet and literature.
