About the Item

Limburg Peasant Women in Straw Bonnets, First Half of the 19th Century This vivid lithograph from the rare 1932 edition *The National Costumes of Holland* by de Gardilanne & Moffatt presents two women from Limburg in southeastern Holland, dressed in traditional attire from the first half of the nineteenth century. The image highlights the strong Flemish and German influences on Limburg dress, as reflected in the broad straw bonnets, hand-tied fichus, and boldly striped woollen skirts. The seated woman wears a blue and yellow wool skirt and a dark blue bodice with short sleeves, the white linen chemise showing beneath. Her fichu, pinned at the back and folded across the front, is of deep-toned cashmere. The upright posture and rich colors evoke the region’s picturesque blend of modesty and vibrancy. Her apron, of plain blue linen, anchors the ensemble. The standing figure, likely older, mirrors this costume but in darker tones. Her fichu is of black cashmere with a classic ‘pine-pattern’ border in yellow, red, and green. A traditional shawl in plaid—typical of the period—is wrapped around her shoulders. The striped wool skirt and ‘Gamp’ umbrella she carries are authentic touches of everyday peasant life. The scene brims with rustic charm, underscored by the women’s square-toed shoes with steel buckles and blue stockings. These Roman Catholic peasants reflect enduring customs of funerals and weddings, even as elaborate jewelry and decorative caps were largely abandoned by this period. Condition: The print is in excellent condition, with strong, unfaded colors and crisp detailing. There is no noticeable foxing or creasing. The paper remains clean and firm with wide margins, ideal for framing. Framing Tips: For best presentation, consider a simple black or dark walnut frame with a soft off-white or pale grey mat to draw attention to the colorful costumes. A double mat treatment can add depth, especially when using a secondary mat that echoes the red or gold tones in the shawls. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the vibrant pigments.
