About the Item

Magdalen Chapel near Winchester – Antique Engraving of Medieval Hospital Site, 1790 This detailed antique engraving presents a series of architectural views and plans of the Magdalen Chapel near Winchester, part of the historic Hospital of St Mary Magdalene. Founded in 1148 for the Master, Brethren, and Sisters of the hospital, the chapel and its associated buildings stood for centuries before being demolished in 1772. The plate provides an invaluable visual record of a vanished medieval institution. The composition is divided into multiple sections: the upper register includes depictions of wall paintings, interior elevations, and precise floor plans, while the lower register features the richly carved Norman doorway, the exterior view of the chapel, and a cross-section of the timber-framed roof. The detail conveys both the Romanesque architectural features and the later medieval additions, capturing the building’s long and layered history. Engraved by James Basire (1730–1802), a master of architectural and antiquarian engraving, after drawings by Jacob Schnebbelie (1760–1792), the image was produced for the Society of Antiquaries in the late 18th century. Schnebbelie’s meticulous draughtsmanship and Basire’s precise linework combine to create a historically rich and visually engaging plate, documenting a structure that no longer exists. For collectors, this engraving offers a rare opportunity to acquire a faithful record of a medieval English hospital complex, significant for both its social history and architectural heritage. Condition: Very good impression with general age-related toning with some spots across the paper. Plate mark clearly visible, strong paper with full margins. Framing tips: A deep walnut or black frame with an off-white archival mat would highlight the fine architectural detail while preserving the print’s period character. Overall size: 51 x 36.5 cm. Image size: 44 x 30 cm.
