About the Item

Male Eurasian Teal – Antique Dutch Bird Print by Sepp & Nozeman, 1789 This original hand-colored copper engraving from 1789 depicts the male Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca), a small and elegant dabbling duck found throughout Europe and Asia. The print was produced for the renowned natural history publication 'Nederlandsche Vogelen' by Christiaan Sepp and Cornelis Nozeman, one of the most important ornithological works of the 18th century and the first to comprehensively describe the birds of the Netherlands. The male Eurasian Teal is portrayed in striking detail, standing at the edge of a grassy bank beside a calm body of water. The artist has faithfully captured the bird’s characteristic chestnut-colored head with a bold iridescent green eye patch, finely speckled breast, and intricate plumage along the flanks and wings. The rendering reflects a blend of scientific observation and refined artistry, consistent with Sepp’s workshop in Amsterdam, where each print was carefully engraved and hand-colored shortly after printing. This print is not only a scientific document but also an aesthetic object, part of a prestigious series published between 1770 and 1829. The quality of execution and coloring makes it highly desirable among collectors of ornithological art and natural history illustration. Condition: Very good condition. Strong impression with original hand coloring. Some light age toning and minor spotting, mostly in the blank margins. Plate mark is clearly visible. No tears or repairs. Verso blank. Framing suggestion: This print would present beautifully in a natural wood or dark green frame, with a soft cream or grey-green mat to accentuate the bird’s earthy tones. Museum-quality glass is recommended to protect the hand coloring. Ideal for display on its own or as part of a grouping of Dutch ornithological prints from the same series.
