About the Item

Manks Shearwater – Antique Bird Print by John Gould, c.1832 This graceful antique ornithological print features the Manks Shearwater (Puffinus anglorum, now Puffinus puffinus), a sleek seabird known for its gliding flight over open waters. The image comes from John Gould’s monumental work The Birds of Europe, published between 1832 and 1837. It is a fine example of 19th-century natural history illustration, showcasing Gould’s keen eye for anatomical accuracy and artistic elegance. The Manx Shearwater is rendered with subtle hand-coloring, presenting its distinctive dark upper plumage and white underparts as it floats low in the water. The bird’s streamlined form and forward gaze suggest motion, a fitting tribute to this species’ incredible migratory feats—traveling thousands of miles each year between northern breeding grounds and wintering areas in the South Atlantic. John Gould, often referred to as the “father of bird study in Britain,” worked with a team of gifted lithographers and colorists—including Edward Lear and Elizabeth Gould (his wife)—to produce a series of ornithological volumes that remain among the most celebrated in the field. The Birds of Europe was one of his earliest major undertakings, combining scientific rigour with visual appeal for collectors, scholars, and bird enthusiasts. Today, this lithograph offers not only aesthetic charm but also a window into early 19th-century ornithology and the fascination with documenting biodiversity during the age of exploration. It’s ideal for collectors of bird art, maritime themes, or Gould’s iconic work. Condition report: Very good condition overall. Minor age toning consistent with age. Several small pinholes along the upper edge (outside the image area), likely from past binding. A few tiny marginal tears not affecting the printed surface. Please refer to the image for full visual details. Framing tips: Best presented in a slender black or dark oak frame with a pale cream mat to accentuate the clean contrast between the bird’s dark feathers and soft background. UV-filtering glass is recommended to preserve the delicate hand-coloring. Overall size: 54.5 x 37 cm. Image size: 34 x 14 cm.
