About the Item
March of the Confederates – The United Cantons and Their Proud Banners, 1855
This vibrant hand-colored lithograph, created by H. Jenny and lithographed by Kümmerly and Wittmer, is part of the *Fest Album* commemorating Bern’s entry into the Swiss Confederation on March 6, 1353. Published in Bern and Zurich in 1855, this large oblong folio captures the grand historical reenactments of 1853, celebrating Switzerland’s unity, military strength, and regional identities through elaborate ceremonial processions.
The composition presents a powerful display of Swiss pride as representatives from various cantons and allied regions march forward, each carrying their respective banners. The flags, rendered in bold, contrasting colors, symbolize the diversity and solidarity of the Swiss Confederation. From the red and white of the Swiss national flag to the striking yellow and black of Bern and Uri, each banner represents the heritage, independence, and resilience of its region.
In the foreground, two confidently striding figures lead the procession. One, dressed in black and yellow striped garments, carries the flag of Uri, featuring the iconic black bull on a golden field. Beside him, a distinguished marcher in blue and white holds the banner of Zug, its rippling fabric catching the light as it waves in the wind. Their postures are strong and purposeful, reflecting the steadfast unity of the Confederation.
Behind them, a diverse group of flag bearers and soldiers continues the march. Clad in richly detailed Renaissance-style uniforms, they wear plumed hats, elaborately decorated doublets, and finely tailored hose. The precision in their movements, the careful rendering of textiles, and the vibrant colors of their clothing highlight the technical mastery of 19th-century lithographic artistry.
This lithograph captures the Romantic-era admiration for Switzerland’s historic struggle for independence and the symbolic power of its national and regional banners. The visual rhythm created by the repeating flags and synchronized movement of the soldiers creates a striking display of pageantry, evoking the deep-rooted pride and military tradition of the Swiss people.
Condition Summary:
The lithograph remains in good condition, with strong hand coloring that enhances the vivid reds, golds, blues, and blacks of the banners and uniforms. Minor signs of aging, such as light foxing in the margins, are present but do not detract from the overall appeal. The paper remains firm and well-preserved, making this a valuable historical collectible.
Framing Tips:
For an impressive display, use a high-quality frame with UV-protected museum glass or acrylic to prevent fading. A wide mat border in neutral or warm tones will complement the bold heraldic colors while maintaining an elegant presentation. A dark wooden or gold-accented frame will enhance the historic significance of the piece. Archival mounting materials should be used to ensure long-term preservation.

"The British Surrendering their Arms to Gen. Washington..." after Renault, 1819
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an engraving entitled “The British surrendering their arms to Gen. Washington after their defeat at Yorktown Virginia October 1781.” The dedication continues in the bottom margin, “To the defenders of American independence, this print is most respectfully inscribed by their fellow citizen, Jn. Fcis. Renault, assistant secretary to the Count de Grass, and engineer to the French Army, at the siege of York.” The engraving is after a painting by John Francis Renault, and engraved by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. and William Allen, in Philadelphia in January of 1819.
This historic print depicts the surrender of the British forces after the Battle of Yorktown. The print shows Lord Cornwallis offering his sword to the Duke de Lauzun, who defers the weapon to General Washington. British officers stand with Cornwallis on the right and French and American officers are shown at center and left. The immediate background is filled with an elaborate allegorical scene. Behind the British troops is a female representation of “Discord,” wearing a billowing robes and liberty cap and floating on storm clouds, as she sends lightning bolts to up-end the British people and a chariot below her. Behind the American and French officers, “Prosperity” stands next to an overflowing cornucopia, with “Justice”, an infant child with a paddle inscribed “American Constitution,” representing the helm of statehood. They crowd around a neoclassical monument with a giant urn...
