About the Item
Title: Marriage and Infant Rituals among the Mexicans, Engraving from 1734
Description: This richly detailed 18th-century copperplate engraving, published in 1723, offers a fascinating window into indigenous ceremonial practices in pre-Columbian Mexico. Titled Mariage des Mexicains and Cérémonies que les Mexicains pratiquent à l'égard de leurs Enfans, this plate is numbered 91 and comes from Volume VI of the influential ethnographic work Cérémonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde, edited by Jean-Frédéric Bernard and illustrated by Bernard Picart.
The upper scene vividly portrays a marriage ceremony among the Mexicans. At the center, a bride and groom are being ceremonially joined by officiants dressed in elaborate feathered attire, while other figures—possibly elders, family members, or priests—observe or assist in the ritual. The architectural backdrop and the elevated throne flanked by steps lend a solemn and grand atmosphere to the rite. Notably, women and children appear on the right side, emphasizing the community's engagement in this significant social institution.
The lower panel presents a striking depiction of early childhood ceremonies. At the left, infants are held over a symbolic structure, possibly part of a purification or naming rite. A dominant figure sits enthroned above with elaborate headdress and armaments, suggesting the presence of a deity or high priest overseeing the ritual. The parents or caretakers, along with other attendants, are actively participating—offering, kneeling, and gesturing—in a collective act of devotion and care.
These engravings were part of a European effort to catalog and visualize global religious practices during the Enlightenment, often through a lens shaped by Christian and colonial perspectives. While not always historically accurate, such images offer valuable insights into how indigenous American cultures were perceived and interpreted in 18th-century Europe.
The condition of this sheet is very good, with minor age-related toning and only light foxing in the margins. The plate impression is strong and well-defined. This sheet is ideal for framing and would appeal to collectors of early ethnographic works, Mesoamerican studies, or religious iconography.
Framing suggestion: A neutral ivory mat paired with a dark wood or ebonized frame will highlight the fine engraving details while preserving the antique character of the piece. Perfect for display in libraries, study rooms, or collections focused on anthropology or colonial-era art.
