Original Antique Sea Chart of the Northern Part of Hispaniola, Western Cuba
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique map titled 'Pas kaart van de Noord Kust van Espaniola (..)'. Beautiful sea chart of the northern part of Hispaniola, western Cuba. The map includes the Turks & Caicos Islands and southern part of the Bahamas. Shows Guanahami or S. Salvador. Guanahani is an island in the Bahamas that was the first land in the New World sighted and visited by Christopher Columbus' first voyage, on October 12, 1492. It is not known precisely which island it was, and several theories have been put forth by historians. Guanahani is the native Taíno name; Columbus called it San Salvador. Originates from 'De Nieuwe Groote Lightende Zee-Fakkel'. Published by J. van Keulen, circa 1684.
The Van Keulens were a family of chartmakers and publishers. The firm, In de Gekroonde Lootsman (In the Crowned Pilot), was founded in 1678 by Johannes van Keulen (1654-1715). Van Keulen originally registered his business as a vendor of books and instruments (specifically cross-staffs). In 1680, however, he gained a privilege from the States of Holland and West Friesland for the publication of pilot guides and sea atlases.
In that year, van Keulen released his Zee-Atlas (Sea Atlas), which secured him a name in the competitive maritime publishing market. In 1681, he published the first volume of Nieuwe Lichtende Zee-Fakkel (New Shining Sea Torch). This would be the first of an eventual five volumes originally published between 1680 and 1684. A sixth volume was added in 1753. The Zee-Fakkel won van Keulen lasting fame. The atlas had charts compiled by Claes Jansz Vooght and artwork from Jan Luyken...

Set of 3 Vibrant Antique Fern Botanical Prints by E.J. Lowe, Hand-Colored, 1868
This beautiful set of three antique botanical prints from *Ferns: British and Exotic* by Edward Joseph Lowe (published between 1857 and 1860) offers a vibrant depiction of nature’s finest ferns. The prints, titled *Onoclea Sensibilis*, *Fadyenia Prolifera*, and *Cyclopeltis Semicordata*, are superbly hand-colored lithographs. These are wonderful specimens for anyone passionate about botany or natural history.
Lowe’s work is a masterpiece of Victorian botanical illustration, with each fern illustrated in intricate detail. The coloring is crisp and true to life, highlighting the natural beauty of these species. *Onoclea Sensibilis*, known as the Sensitive Fern, showcases its iconic fronds and distinctive fertile spikes. *Fadyenia Prolifera* features slender leaves and beautifully curled leaflets, while *Cyclopeltis Semicordata* exhibits the fine details of its rich, green pinnate leaves.
These hand-colored lithographs were produced by the noted printers, Day & Son, who were renowned for their high-quality printwork during the 19th century. Lowe’s publication is highly prized among collectors, gardeners, and botanists alike.
These prints are a stunning addition to any space, whether framed in a study, library, or living room, offering an aesthetic that bridges science and art. They are particularly sought after by collectors of antique botanical art...

Florentine Nobleman of the Middle Ages, 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: "Civilian Costume at the End of the 15th Century"
Description: The image is a print from a series the "Costume du Moyen Age" dated 1847, and titled "Costume Civil de la Fin du XVe Siècle," which translates to "Civilian Costume at the End of the 15th Century." It showcases a man of status, possibly a noble or a wealthy burgher, standing in a poised and confident manner.
He is attired in an ornate cloak covered in a complex pattern of fleur-de-lis and cross motifs, indicative of wealth and possibly a connection to royalty or high social rank. The cloak is open at the front to reveal a blue doublet with a belt, and he wears red hose—a fashion staple of the late medieval period. His footwear is also red, which stands out against the more subdued tones of his outfit.
On his head, he sports a fur-trimmed hat, adding to the luxuriousness of his attire. In one hand, he holds a long staff, which serves as both a walking aid and a symbol of authority. His other hand rests on the hilt of a dagger, further indicating his readiness to defend his status or engage in the political or civic matters of his time.
The artist has skillfully rendered the textiles and accessories with great care, emphasizing the fashion and social cues of the late 15th-century European society.
The colors have a nice glow over them. Historically, egg whites, known as glair, and sometimes egg yolk were indeed used in illumination and painting, particularly in manuscripts, to give colors a brighter appearance and to add a sheen or gloss to the work. This technique was quite common during the Middle Ages...

A Glimpse into the Early 19th Century Urban Landscape of New York, a 1842 Print
Located in Langweer, NL
The hand-colored print titled "New York," published in 1842, presents a detailed and picturesque view of the cityscape of New York as it appeared in the early 19th century. The title "New York" is centered below the image. Below the title, the text reads "LONDON: Published by Thomas Kelly. 17, Paternoster Row," indicating the publisher and location of publication in London. Additionally, the text "S. Davenport. Sculp." is printed beneath the image, signifying that the engraving was done by S. Davenport.
Description of the Image:
- **Perspective**: The image provides a broad view, likely from an elevated point, showing the expanse of the city. The perspective gives a sense of depth, with the street extending into the distance.
- **Central Street**: A wide, unpaved street runs down the center of the image, flanked by rows of buildings on both sides. This street is bustling with various activities.
- **Buildings**: The buildings are primarily two to three stories tall, featuring a mix of architectural styles typical of the period. Some have distinct red roofs, adding a touch of color to the scene.
- **Churches**: There are several prominent churches with tall spires visible in the background, indicating the importance of religious institutions during that time.
- **Foreground**: In the foreground, to the right, there is a large, columned building, which might be a significant public or religious structure.
- **Activity**: The street scene includes horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians, capturing the everyday life of the city's inhabitants.
- **Harbor**: In the far background, you can see masts of ships, indicating the proximity of the harbor and the importance of maritime activities to the city.
Artistic and Historical Context:
- **Engraving Style**: The work of S. Davenport, an engraver, suggests fine detail and precision typical of hand-colored prints of that era.
- **Historical Significance**: This print serves as a valuable historical document, offering a glimpse into the urban layout and architecture of New York City in the early 1840s.
- **Publishing Context**: Being published in London by Thomas Kelly indicates a transatlantic interest in the growing metropolis of New York, reflecting its emerging significance on the global stage.
This print is not only an artistic representation but also a historical record, encapsulating the essence of New York City during a period of significant growth and development.
Identifying specific buildings from a historical print like this one can be challenging, especially without modern landmarks for direct comparison. However, a few notable buildings and features from New York in the early 1840s could potentially be recognized based on historical context and architectural details.
Potential Recognizable Buildings:
1. **St. Paul's Chapel**: Given its prominent spire and proximity to the center of early New York...
