Maundy Thursday and Good Friday Rites – Old 1734 Catholic Engraving of Holy Week

About the Item

Title: Maundy Thursday and Good Friday Rites – Rare 1734 Catholic Engraving of Holy Week Description: This beautifully detailed 18th-century copperplate engraving depicts two significant rituals of the Christian Holy Week—Maundy Thursday and Good Friday—as practiced in the Roman Catholic tradition. Published in 1734 as part of The Ceremonies and Religious Customs of Various Nations of the Known World, this work is a visual testimony to the liturgical customs of the Catholic Church and the devotional life of its followers during the most solemn week of the Christian calendar. The upper panel is titled 'Cérémonie de laver les pieds à douze pauvres le Jeudi Saint' (The ceremony of washing the feet of twelve poor men on Maundy Thursday). The scene unfolds in a grand ecclesiastical interior where clergy kneel in reverence, washing the feet of twelve humble recipients, symbolizing Christ’s act of humility during the Last Supper. The composition is lively and filled with spectators—men, women, and children—who gather to witness this act of charity and devotion. The inclusion of vessels, towels, and pious gestures heightens the ceremonial realism. This practice, rooted in Christian humility and service, remains a poignant representation of clerical compassion. The lower panel is titled *L’adoration de la Croix par le peuple le Vendredi Saint* (The adoration of the cross by the people on Good Friday). Here, a priest presents the crucifix for veneration as a solemn line of parishioners kneel in turn to kiss or touch it. The setting is again a richly adorned church interior, with liturgical furnishings such as candlesticks, altar cloths, and sacred images framing the scene. The congregation includes individuals from various social standings, reflecting the communal nature of this act of devotion, which commemorates the Passion and crucifixion of Jesus. Both engravings exemplify the meticulous style of Bernard Picart and his school, combining visual accuracy with an emotional depth that speaks to the faith of the period. They are not merely documentary illustrations but spiritual reflections, preserving the pageantry and intimacy of Catholic liturgical traditions for future generations. Condition report: Good condition overall. The print retains strong plate impressions and rich detail. Minor toning and occasional foxing are visible around the margins, with some edge wear on the lower right. The sheet is untrimmed with full plate marks intact. Framing suggestions: A vertical frame with an archival mat will showcase the two stacked scenes beautifully. Use a warm off-white or antique cream mat and a classic dark wood or black frame to complement the engraving’s fine lines. UV-filtering glass is recommended to protect the print from light damage. Float mounting may be used to reveal the full deckled edge and plate border for historical effect.
