About the Item

Title: Elegant Noblewoman in Peach and Lavender Cloak, 15th Century Costume Study Description: This finely hand-colored engraving, published in 1845 as part of the distinguished series Costumes Historiques des XIIIe, XIVe et XVe Siècles, features an elegant noblewoman dressed in the fashion of early 15th-century Italy. With her graceful pose and refined garments, this plate offers a superb example of feminine courtly attire during a period of evolving European sartorial culture. The woman is depicted in a serene, slightly turned stance, her right arm outstretched in a poised and measured gesture. She is dressed in a full-length lavender gown, finely shaded and softly flowing to the ground. Draped over this is a voluminous peach cloak, whose gentle folds and subtle color contrast with the deep hues of the dress beneath. Her white headdress is intricately patterned and tied close to the chin, leaving only her composed facial expression visible. The garment evokes modesty and grace, hallmarks of noble virtue in the period. The artist's attention to textile detail and the shading of the fabrics enhances the tactile realism of the scene. The contours of the folds and the layered textures create a lifelike sense of movement, while the muted color palette and soft shadows lend a timeless dignity. This particular costume, likely worn by a lady of status, reflects the elegance and restraint of early Quattrocento fashion, where silhouette and drapery took precedence over lavish ornamentation. Condition Report: The print remains in very good condition, with fresh, well-preserved colors. There is some mild age-related foxing, primarily visible in the outer margins and not affecting the main image. The paper is stable and shows no tears or folds. Framing Tips: This graceful costume study would be best displayed in a soft gold, antique silver, or muted wood frame to harmonize with the gentle peach and lavender tones. Use a neutral off-white or ivory mat to draw focus to the figure’s delicate coloration. To protect the artwork, conservation-grade materials and UV-protective glass are recommended. Ideal for standalone display or as part of a series of period costume engravings.
