Modern Northern European Woodcut Print Flemish Proverbs ‘1934’ by Edgard Tytgat

About the Item

A woodcut in color on Japanese paper: "Flemish Proverbs," 1934. Signed and dated. Tytgat's style can be described as a simplification of reality with an intended naivety. He derived his inspiration mainly from daily life and incorporated these experiences in his own dream world. For the present lot Tytgat was inspired by the traditional Dutch language proverbs, often comical and crude. Tytgat also references the tradition of visual representation of these proverbs that dates back all the way to medieval age and, most famously, to the imagery of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-1569). Tytgat's work always has a certain poetic and playful character, soft irony, youthful courage and underlying eroticism which is also visible in the present lot. Referencing the past, what is at the same time foundational yet passé to Northern Europe in the age of "modernity," speaks of the strange social context in the year Tytgat created this and many other "traditional" works. It's important to remember that just a few hundred kilometers away, by August 1934, Adolf Hitler assumes the title of Führer of Germany, following the death of President Paul von Hindenburg.

This is a hand-colored, remarked and signed Charles Johnson Payne lithographic print, entitle: The Stone Faceder. The border area of the art is sign by the artist using his known pseudonym - Snaffles. The print depicts equestrian style riding in the Irish countryside. The art also features a hand-drawn fox running through brush leading one to believe this is an Irish fox hunting print. A wonderfully designed and richly colored woodcut image by New York City/American-born Jewish artist Irving Amen. Pencil signed, titled (Susan), and noted "artist proof" (likely a small edition after the initial run of 50-100 prints) by the artist. Would be a great eye-catching work in about any setting.
