Napoleon Bonaparte on Horseback – Imperial Guard Lithograph, 1859

About the Item

Napoleon Bonaparte on Horseback – Imperial Guard Lithograph, 1859 This finely hand-colored lithograph presents a commanding portrait of Napoleon I on horseback, surrounded by officers of his Imperial Guard. Drawn by Auguste Raffet and engraved by Charles Colin, it was published in Paris in 1859 by Furne Fils as part of the acclaimed historical series 'Napoléon Ier et la Garde Impériale', with text by military historian Eugène Fieffé. This image, both iconic and intimate, captures the Emperor as he was remembered by his troops—stoic, self-assured, and central to the might of the French Empire. Mounted on a dignified white charger, Napoleon wears his traditional green colonel’s coat of the Chasseurs à Cheval, white trousers, and black bicorne hat. His posture is upright but relaxed, projecting authority without ostentation. The horse is captured mid-step, adding a sense of motion and immediacy to the composition. Behind Napoleon, officers in full uniform observe attentively, forming a dignified yet subdued backdrop to the central figure. This print exemplifies Raffet’s ability to depict historical figures with lifelike presence and narrative subtlety. Trained under Gros, Raffet became one of the most respected illustrators of Napoleonic campaigns, combining romantic style with documentary accuracy. His works are known for their expressive detail and are considered essential visual records of 19th-century military history. Published by Furne Fils, a leading Parisian publisher of fine illustrated historical works, this lithograph stands as a collectible piece that represents not just the man but the myth of Napoleon—his role as strategist, leader, and symbol of an era. Condition: Good condition. Some age-related foxing and light toning in the outer margins. Image area remains crisp, well-inked, and richly colored. No tears or restorations. Framing tips: This portrait benefits from classic presentation. Use a warm white or ivory mount and a dark wood or gold frame to highlight the imperial colors. Display in an office, library, or gallery wall alongside other military or historical prints for maximum effect.
