About the Item

Napoleon's Defeat at Waterloo: French Cannons Seized and Transported, July 1815 This finely crafted engraving, published in 1816, captures a significant moment in the aftermath of the Battle of Waterloo. Depicting the small Belgian village of Waterloo on July 24, 1815, the scene illustrates the transportation of captured French artillery following Napoleon’s ultimate defeat. It is part of 'The Campaign of Waterloo', a series that documented key locations and events related to one of the most decisive battles in European history. The composition is rich in detail and narrative, combining architectural elements, figures, and movement in a way that draws the viewer into the historical setting. To the right of the image stands the Chapel of Saint Joseph, an elegant domed structure that had already been a landmark for over a century. The chapel’s solemn presence contrasts with the bustling activity in the foreground, where allied soldiers and civilians coordinate the removal of Napoleon’s cannons. The village buildings on the left, with their Flemish-style facades, add authenticity to the depiction, as do the expressive figures scattered throughout the scene. A convoy of horses and carts pulls the heavy artillery through the village, emphasizing the weight—both literal and symbolic—of Napoleon’s defeat. Officers on horseback appear to oversee the operation, reinforcing the sense of discipline and organization among the victors. The figures on foot, including civilians and local townspeople, contribute to the lively atmosphere, with some appearing to discuss the spectacle unfolding before them. The sky above, animated with dramatic cloud formations, lends a sense of movement and depth, a hallmark of the finest early 19th-century engravings. This print was published by Robert Bowyer, a prominent British engraver and publisher known for producing high-quality visual records of historical events. It was likely intended for collectors with an interest in military history and Napoleonic campaigns. Today, it remains a valuable artifact for those who appreciate both historical documentation and fine artistry. Condition Report: - Paper: Thick, high-quality wove paper with wide margins. Some light foxing and minor edge discoloration consistent with age. - Image Quality: Colors remain vibrant, with excellent contrast and clarity. No significant fading. - Surface: A few minor handling marks, with no major creases or tears. Slight wear along the edges. - Overall: A well-preserved example with strong visual appeal, suitable for display or collection. Framing Tips: - Use museum-grade, acid-free matting to prevent paper degradation. A neutral-tone mat will complement the historical nature of the print. - UV-protective glass or acrylic is recommended to shield against light exposure and fading. - A period-appropriate wooden frame, either gilded or dark-stained, will enhance the engraving’s classical aesthetic. - Placement should be in a cool, dry environment, away from direct sunlight or high humidity, to preserve the integrity of the paper and colors. This striking engraving is both a testament to Napoleon’s fall and a masterful piece of historical printmaking. It serves as a compelling addition to any collection of Napoleonic, military, or historical artwork.

"The British Surrendering their Arms to Gen. Washington..." after Renault, 1819
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an engraving entitled “The British surrendering their arms to Gen. Washington after their defeat at Yorktown Virginia October 1781.” The dedication continues in the bottom margin, “To the defenders of American independence, this print is most respectfully inscribed by their fellow citizen, Jn. Fcis. Renault, assistant secretary to the Count de Grass, and engineer to the French Army, at the siege of York.” The engraving is after a painting by John Francis Renault, and engraved by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. and William Allen, in Philadelphia in January of 1819. This historic print depicts the surrender of the British forces after the Battle of Yorktown. The print shows Lord Cornwallis offering his sword to the Duke de Lauzun, who defers the weapon to General Washington. British officers stand with Cornwallis on the right and French and American officers are shown at center and left. The immediate background is filled with an elaborate allegorical scene. Behind the British troops is a female representation of “Discord,” wearing a billowing robes and liberty cap and floating on storm clouds, as she sends lightning bolts to up-end the British people and a chariot below her. Behind the American and French officers, “Prosperity” stands next to an overflowing cornucopia, with “Justice”, an infant child with a paddle inscribed “American Constitution,” representing the helm of statehood. They crowd around a neoclassical monument with a giant urn...
