About the Item

Dutch Naval Commanders of Zeeland – Gelein Evertsen, Kornelis Evertsen, Adriaan Bankert This finely executed set of 18th-century copper engravings presents three distinguished naval leaders from the Dutch Republic’s maritime province of Zeeland: Gelein Evertsen, Kornelis Evertsen, and Adriaan Bankert. Each man is portrayed in formal half-length view within an oval frame, dressed in armor and lace cravats, exuding authority and command. The first portrait depicts Gelein Evertsen (1648–1690), Lieutenant-Admiral of Zeeland, a member of the illustrious Evertsen naval family. He played a crucial role in the Anglo-Dutch Wars and various Mediterranean expeditions, continuing the family’s proud maritime tradition. His armor, ruffled cravat, and composed gaze convey both leadership and a readiness for battle. The second engraving shows Kornelis Evertsen the Younger (1628–1679), also a Lieutenant-Admiral of Zeeland. Known for his fierce loyalty to the Dutch fleet, Kornelis fought in several key naval engagements against England and France. The portrait captures his strong features and elaborate wig, paired with finely detailed armor that speaks to his high rank and long service. The third portrait features Adriaan Bankert (1629–1702), a celebrated Lieutenant-Admiral of Zeeland renowned for his decisive tactics during the Third Anglo-Dutch War. He commanded squadrons with great skill, often against superior numbers, and is remembered as one of Zeeland’s most capable naval officers. His depiction in armor with a medal around his neck emphasizes his valor and decorated service. These engravings are not only masterful works of portraiture but also enduring historical records of men who shaped the naval power of the Dutch Republic during its Golden Age. The combination of precise linework, careful shading, and formal presentation reflects the 18th-century taste for commemorating national heroes in print. Condition: Good for age. Paper shows light toning and a few minor handling marks. Faint foxing in margins but no tears or repairs. Strong impression with visible plate marks. Framing tips: Best displayed together in a triple-aperture mount within a dark mahogany or black frame. A cream or off-white mount with a thin gold inner line will enhance the portraits’ elegance and bring out the fine engraved detail. Technique: Copper engraving Maker: Unknown Dutch engraver, Netherlands, c.1750
