About the Item
Noddy Tern – Antique Bird Print by John Gould, Hand-Colored c.1832
This elegant hand-colored lithograph features the Noddy Tern (Anous stolidus), a sleek and graceful seabird captured in exquisite detail by renowned ornithologist and artist John Gould. The print originates from Gould’s acclaimed work Birds of Europe, published between 1832 and 1837, one of the most important 19th-century contributions to ornithological illustration.
The Noddy Tern is depicted standing in profile on a pale rocky outcrop, its smooth black-brown plumage rendered with refined tonal shading. Gould’s lithographic precision highlights the bird’s long, slender bill and confident posture—hallmarks of this oceanic species, which is known for its aerial agility and coastal nesting habits. The subtle backdrop leaves full attention to the subject, lending the image a timeless, almost sculptural quality.
Gould’s Birds of Europe was a monumental achievement of natural history publishing, combining scientific observation with artistic mastery. This particular image exemplifies his ability to elevate ornithological documentation to fine art—making it highly desirable to collectors of antique natural history prints, decorators, and bird enthusiasts alike.
Condition report: Very good condition overall. General age-related toning; minor marginal imperfections and four small punched holes outside the image area (top margin), typical of original binding. Some tiny marginal tears.
Framing tips: This print pairs well with a narrow, dark wood or black lacquer frame, and a soft ivory or pale gray mat, allowing the contrast of the bird’s dark plumage to stand out. Ideal for a natural history gallery wall or a refined study.

John Gould
John Gould was an English ornithologist and bird artist. He published several monographs on birds, illustrated by plates that he produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. Gould has been considered the father of bird study in Australia, and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. His identification of the birds now nicknamed Darwin's finches played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, On the Origin of Species.
