About the Item

Optica View The Hague Prinsegracht, Basset c.1770 Hand-Colored Engraving This is a beautifully engraved and hand-colored optical print titled *Vue perspective du Chateau du Prince Gracht a la Haye*, published by Basset, Rue St Jacques, Paris, circa 1770. The print depicts a lively street scene along the Prinsegracht (Prince’s Canal) in The Hague. The left foreground shows elegant tall townhouses with the coat of arms above the doorway, possibly indicating an official building or noble residence. The canal runs into the distance, flanked by mature trees and bordered by classic Dutch brick architecture. The street is bustling with carriages, men and women in 18th-century attire, and pedestrians strolling along the tree-lined promenade. A gilt-trimmed carriage with red wheels and a single horse dominates the foreground, adding depth to the perspective. Optical prints (vues d’optique) like this were popular during the 18th century, designed to be viewed through a zograscope, giving an illusion of depth and perspective. Publishers such as Basset in Paris issued extensive series of European cityscapes for this purpose. Condition report: Good condition overall. Crisp impression with rich period hand coloring in blue, green, red, and ochre. Minor age toning and faint soiling to blank margins; the image area clean and bright. A couple of minor handling marks typical of 18th-century prints. Wide original margins intact. Framing suggestion: Frame with a classic dark wood or black moulding and an archival off-white mat to enhance the colors and perspective effect. UV-protective glass recommended to preserve the vibrancy of the hand coloring.
