About the Item

Optica View Amsterdam Hogesluis & Amstel Locks, Basset Paris c.1770 This is a finely engraved and hand-colored optica view titled Vue de l’ecluse d’Amstel regardant par le dehors d’Amsterdam, published in Paris by Basset circa 1770. The print shows a detailed perspective of the Hogesluis lock on the Amstel River looking towards the Buiten-Amstel with the Amsteldijk and the many windmills along the Zaagmolensloot. On the left is the bolwerk Westerblokhuis with windmill De Groen and the Utrechtsepoort gate. On the right is the Weesperzijde dike with promenading figures. The scene includes horse riders, elegant walkers, a rowing boat, sailing ships with vivid red sails, and a richly detailed Dutch canal landscape with numerous windmills. Optica prints or vues d’optique were perspective engravings designed for viewing through a zograscope, creating a three-dimensional illusion. This print bears the reverse title at the top for viewing: Vue de l’Ecluse d’Amstel. Basset of Rue St. Jacques, Paris, was a leading publisher of such optical views in the 18th century, producing scenes of major European cities and ports for educational and decorative use. Physical characteristics: Inked engraving with original period hand coloring in watercolor. Medium: paper, water-based pigments. Technique: etching and hand coloring with brush. Condition report: Good condition. Strong impression with bright period hand coloring. Light general age toning and minor handling marks typical for 18th-century optica prints. Wide margins with a faint handwritten annotation in the lower margin. No tears or repairs visible. Framing suggestion: Frame with a simple dark wood or black frame and an archival off-white or cream mat to highlight the vivid coloring and enhance the decorative perspective. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve color vibrancy and paper quality.
